Elven Scout

The Elven Scout is a variant of the Ranger class.

NOTE: Elven Scouts will receive either Sorcerer-style spellcasting ability (possibly with Divine spells -- uncertain at this time) on the same schedule as normal Rangers or receive some kind of Psionic abilities (probably similar to those of the Psion Nomad class). I haven't yet made the decision what they get.

Normally, only Elves are allowed this specific variant of the Ranger class. Generous DMs who feel a player presents a good case for his character having these class characteristics may of course choose to allow non-Elves to take this class.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Elven Scout.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency:

Elven Scouts are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, and shields. Winter Elves are also proficient in small arms and the Winter Elf Claymore, but not shields.

Favored Terrain:

Instead of Favored Enemies as for standard Rangers, Elven Scouts have Favored Terrains. The first Favored Terrain is chosen at first level, and an additional Favored Terrain type is chosen at each level evenly divisible by five. Available terrains include Arctic, Desert, Forest, Highlands, Jungle, Mountains, Plains, Scrub/Moor, and Swamp/Marsh. The Elven Scout gains a +2 competency bonus to Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Spot, and Survival checks in his Favored Terrain, and also reduces movement penalties to the next higher multiplier category. Similarly, penalties to actions for operating in a Favored Terrain are reduced by two. At every level evenly divisible by five, an Elven Scout can choose one previously possessed Favored Terrain for which all bonuses are increased by two, and all penalty reductions are improved by two.

Track:

Elven Scouts gain Track as a bonus feat at first level, as normal for Rangers.

Wild Empathy:

Elven Scouts gain the Wild Empathy ability at first level, as normal for Rangers.

Combat Style:

Elven Scouts gain the Combat Style ability at second level, as normal for Rangers. In addition to Two-Weapon and Archery, Winter Elves may also choose Riflery as a Combat Style.

The Riflery Combat Style provides the Point Blank Shot feat for free, instead of the Two-Weapon Fighting or Rapid Shot feats provided by Two-Weapon or Archery, respectively.

Endurance:

Elven Scouts gain Endurance as a bonus feat at third level.

Alertness:

Elven Scouts gain Alertness as a bonus feat at fourth level.

Second Favored Terrain:

Elven Scouts gain their second Favored Terrain at fifth level.

Improved Combat Style:

Elven Scouts gain Precise Shot as a bonus feat at sixth level for the Riflery Combat Style, or gain benefits as normal for Rangers with the Archery or Two-Weapon Combat Style.

Woodland Stride:

Elven Scouts gain Woodland Stride as a bonus feat at seventh level. This feat applies to typical impediments to travel for any already Favored Terrain type in addition to undergrowth, including ice or deep snow for Arctic, soft sand for Desert, shifting loose rocks and craggy ground for Mountains, sucking muck for Swamp/Marsh, and so on. The terrain must be something through which a character travels upright, on two feet -- swinging on vines, swimming, and other non-bipedal motion are not affected by this ability.

Swift Tracker:

Elven Scouts gain the Swift Tracker ability at eighth level, as normal for Rangers.

Evasion:

Elven Scouts gain the Evasion ability at ninth level, as normal for Rangers.

Third Favored Terrain:

Elven Scouts gain their third Favored Terrain at tenth level.

Combat Style Mastery:

Elven Scouts gain Improved Precise Shot as a bonus feat at eleventh level for the Riflery Combat Style, or gain benefits as normal for Rangers with the Archery or Two-Weapon Combat Style.

Camouflage:

Elven Scouts gain the Camouflage ability at thirteenth level, as normal for Rangers.

Fourth Favored Terrain:

Elven Scouts gain their fourth Favored Terrain at fifteenth level.

Hide in Plain Sight:

Elven Scouts gain the Hide in Plain Sight ability at seventeenth level, as normal for Rangers.

Fifth Favored Terrain:

Elven Scouts gain their fifth Favored Terrain at twentieth level.
